You can control most display properties of a given display through CSS.
Add the style definition, using CSS syntax, to the file [project root]/web/stylesheet.css, and refer to the style you created in the html.styleClass shared property of the display element (if you wish to specify a permanent style to that element), or by adding a <Style Class> text element to the display and setting it dynamically through modelling.
If the sole difference between the displays in your case, is the color (or any other CSS-based display property), then there's actually no reason to use a Variable Pane; a single display with a <Style Class> element should suffice.
