The layout of Tersus applications can be highly customized, as witnessed by the fact that this site is implemented using a Tersus application.
The tutorials address certain aspects of the platform, but of course not everything, and I agree that design-wise they could be improved.
To address the specific example you mention, just place your rows in a Display/Grid, and the controls will become aligned, divide the controls among the rows to have a different layout. See for example this thread.
Apart from using additional controls from the Display category, there's additional design features which you'll want to get acquainted with. See this thread for more details.
