The solution is to use the Generate Barcode plugin in a Callable Service, which outputs the bar code as an image file.
Image/<Path> should be set to a url calling the Callable Service.
This is similar to the first use case here, except the image file is not read from a database but rather generated on the fly by Generate Barcode.
