I'm guessing that there's no incompatibility with the specific openoffice version, but rather with the possibility that the new openoffice has not been fully configured yet (post install), and is expecting some response to the registration, license or some other dialog/wizard it displays when being run for the first time, and until the user responds to it.
You can try running openoffice with the additional parameters described in http://www.tersus.com/#Id=685 (that's the second command line example given in that page).
Alternatively run it without any parameters whatsoever and respond to the prompts/wizard, then exit and run once more to make sure it no longer displays those prompts, then exit again and run as a server.
