Nice observation. I used the local run button on the Application Server view tab, and not the run button on the main toolbar. Using the run button on the main toolbar indeed opens the simulator. (It didn't occur to me that there may be a difference between how the two run buttons work.)
As far as I'm concerned it now works fine.
