Using tomcat manager (http://www.domainname.com/manager/html), check if a root application (Path = /) is already defined - certain tomcat installation methods have a landing page application installed by default.
If it is, click its Undeploy link to remove it.

Stop tomcat

Rename your application context file (appname.xml) to ROOT.xml (case is important)

Open ROOT.xml in a text editor

Change the path attribute of the Context element from "appname" to "/"

Save and close the editor

Start tomcat
