There's actually no way to set the width dynamically, and implementing such a method is not planned, as the current split pane is part of the legacy display UI, which we plan to phase out in the future. Our UI plans are described in the last stable announcement (see http://www.tersus.com/#Id=7833).
Regarding your attempt to specify it in the html.tag property (which overrides the default tag assummed for the display element) or as a model <element> (which maps to the matching HTML attributes for the current tag), I'd like to point out that these accept only the standard DTD elements, and since leftPaneWidth is not part of HTML, but rather a Tersus-specific property (which is used to compute other, standard HTML attributes/CSS properties to reach the desired visual effect), it cannot have an effect on the resulting HTML/CSS.
